Ventana Inn & Spa, Big Sur, is all about senses. Sight, of course, is an obvious place to begin. Arriving at the resort, the swaying pines and welcoming architecture are easy on the eyes. In one of five types of rooms, three types of suites, or even one of three villas, you'll see a woodsy-yet-California-modern theme, replete with beamed ceilings, fireplaces, private decks, and views out to the rolling Pacific Ocean.

You'll hear very little, save for music from your iPod dock, and the laughter of fellow travelers. You'll feel the softness of the sun kissing your skin near the pool. Exactly how much of your skin you want exposed is up to you, as one pool is "Clothes Optional." Guests can also choose to feel deep massages, wraps, and even a tightening of the physique at the Spa & Fitness center.

Of course, one cannot forget taste. Local and seasonal favorites range from organic beets and Pacific Northwest oysters, to lamb loin and foie gras. How dishes actually come together, must be seen for yourself.
